Albanian Heritage

Albanians are a native Balkan population, descending from the ancient Illyrians, whose culture manifested itself around 2000 BC. Illyrians were sociable and hospitable, renowned for their daring and bravery at war as well as equality between men and women. They were highly skilled miners, boatbuilders and sailors; their light, swift galleys (liburna) were of such superior design that the Romans incorporated them into their own fleet. Today, the country is divided into two main cultural groups and dialects: the northern Albanians, or Gegs, and the southern Albanians, or Tosks.

Albanians are exceptionally generous and hospitable. A guest is given enough to "feed an army," even though the host may go hungry the next day. Albania has been known among European countries for its religious tolerance, given the peaceful coexistence of Roman Catholicism, Greek Orthodoxy, and Islam in the country.
